Water Treatment Plant Opens After a 30 -Year Long Controversy

A thirty year old controversy came to an end and Austin’s $500 million worth water treatment plant is pumping. The conflict was going on between the city and environmentalist since 1984. The issue was that the plant was trenching through environmentally sensitive areas. Voters had approved for this plant in 1984 itself that is thirty years ago. But due to this controversy it was a long waited.

Austin has two water treatment plants one is 60 years and other is 45 years old. The plant that opened today will provide a backup for existing city facilities.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell said that this is been a long process to start this treatment plant. And those who have fought saying that the money spent on it could have been used in a better manner.

Paul Robbins, Director of Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies said that he was emphasizing more on spending that money to make Austin water efficient city than just building a treatment plant. “ It would have been more cheaper and efficient” He said.

Mayor Elect Steve Adler said that we have got a lot to learn from this experience of building this news water plant. “Austin water customers are saving more and more water and not receiving any financial reward for that. Their water bills are not detected as expected and that is because large capital expenditures”, said Adler showing his concern about the issue.

He hopes to convince Austin residents that future outlays of this size can be delayed with more conversations…. MORE
